What type of seaweed does our partner organisation plant?

Together with our partners, we support the planting of kelp — a type of seaweed that plays a vital role in restoring ocean ecosystems and maintaining natural balance.

How exactly does kelp benefit the environment and people?

1. Kelp absorbs large amounts of CO₂, helping to reduce the effects of global warming. It grows 10 to 30 times faster than trees, making it highly effective in purifying the air.

2. Seaweed protects oceans from acidification by stabilizing their chemical balance, which supports the survival of corals, shellfish, and other marine organisms.

3. Underwater kelp forests provide a home for thousands of marine species, offering them a place to live, reproduce, and feed.

4. Kelp reduces coastal erosion by softening the impact of waves and storms, helping to protect shoreline areas.

5. It is used as an organic fertilizer and animal feed, improving soil quality and crop yields.

6. In the food industry, it serves as a natural thickener and a source of iodine — essential for thyroid health.

SeaTrees

SeaTrees (by Sustainable Surf) — an international initiative that restores ocean ecosystems, including kelp forests, mangroves, seagrasses, and coral reefs. The organization engages local communities, creates jobs, and implements innovative environmental solutions to reduce CO₂ emissions and preserve ocean biodiversity.

Our contributions are aimed at improving emotional well-being, protecting rights, and creating safe spaces for healing and recovery. Also, in 2024, together with our partners at SeaTrees (by Sustainable Surf), we planted over 20,000 kelp units, restoring approximately 4 hectares of marine farms across various locations worldwide. Specifically, in the USA, around 8,000 seaweed plants were planted across approximately 1.6 hectares in the coastal areas of Palos Verdes, Stillwater Cove, Moss Landing, Monterey, and La Jolla. In Australia, Sydney, where a project is underway to restore 70 km of underwater forests, we planted 4,000 kelp specimens on 0.8 hectares. In Portugal (Cascais), Fiji (Viti Levu Island), Indonesia (Sulawesi Island), and Kenya (Marareni and Mida Creek), an additional 8,000 seaweed plants were planted, covering about 1.6 hectares.

These efforts not only help absorb CO₂ but also contribute to the restoration of marine ecosystems, coastal protection, job creation, and the support of sustainable development in local communities.
